I See Offline People

The new Facebook chat / sidebar sucks.

It first appeared on Sunday 17th of July, and it just might be the biggest reason yet for Facebook users to switch to another social network, even if just for chat.

Here's the deal: The new chat, according to Facebook developers, is a 'Faster way to message.' It has a 'sidebar' which, if opened, hogs up screen space, as the page is shifted the left to accommodate it. It is supposed to show you a list of the friends you interact with the most, or interacted with recently. And oh, you can't scroll down.

The worst way to message?

You can't scroll down.

It displays friends which Facebook thinks you interact with the most. And the number of friends displayed depends on the screen size - I can see 19 friends on my 1366 x 768 resolution.
That means, if I have more than 19 people online, I cannot know who the others are, since I can see only 19 people at a time. Out of which, if Facebook displays a few offline friends who I interacted with recently, then I may see even less people online.

I see offline people.

Why on earth would I want to chat with people who are offline?? Why display them in the first place??

It also means that if I want to chat with someone who I haven't chatted with recently, I have NO idea if he or she is online, because Facebook doesn't think it is important for me to chat with them. Wow.

And oh, if you've made a chat block list, you might as well forget about it. Earlier, if the blocked person was on another list as well, he was still blocked in chat. Now, if the blocked person is on any other list, he still shows up in chat.

After a day of this obnoxious chat interface, Facebook brought the old one back for a day, but again switched back, torturing us many users who had started thinking that Facebook had got rid of it for good.

Apparently, this new interface is a result of Facebook integrating Skype to their chat system.

All it means is, a lot if users are going to switch over to Google+ if Facebook doesn't address this issue.

Fail, Facebook.

Now I can't even see how many friends are supposed to be online. Facebook chat is going from Terrible to Horrendous.

How to: move your blog to a custom domain

Time: 1 hour (approx)
Cost: 10 US$ (approx)

This is for all users who are on blogger, and wish to migrate to their own domain.

For example, I used to have the blogspot domain syzygial-scorpius.blogspot.com but now it is mayankmrug.com.

Understand what we are doing here, that is, the blog and all the content is still hosted by blogger, but we now have our own name to get to the site instead of something.blogspot.com.

The first step would be to register your own custom domain, which can cost around 5 to 20 US $ per year.

Google itself does give an option to register a domain through a Google partner for 10 US $ per year, alongwith a free subscription to Google Apps.

Buy a domain for your blog through Google (under Settings->Basic)

If you do not want to try Google's partner (I did not) you can register through the variety of web hosting providers available. I did it through Netfirms who had a sale on domain names so it cost me 4.95 US $ with Domain Privacy for free. Domain Privacy basically means that, if you try to find out who is the owner of this domain by doing a WHO IS search, you will not be able to.

Once you get the domain and activate it, the first step is to change certain settings in your hosting provider's cpanel :

Go to Domain Settings click on your domain name and change the DNS records. You need to give a new alias (CNAME) with the host name as 'www' and the destination/address as 'ghs.google.com'.

Then you need to add A-records. This part is optional but I recommend you do it because this will make sure that, even if a visitor types the site address without 'www', he reaches the site.

Enter your domain name in the format example.com, and list the I.P. addresses shown below in the "A" section. You'll need to create four separate A-records which point to four different Google IPs.

That is all the setting you need to do on your hosting provider. There may also be an option to point to another url, but don't do this.

Now you need to change blogger publishing settings (under Settings->Basic->Blog Address). It is recommended that you wait for an hour after registering a new domain. Even if you do try to save this setting before that, it might not work.

You just need to write your new domain name (with 'www') and remember to tick 'Redirect to..' so that it redirects even when users write the naked domain name.

The new domain name should now be working. If it is not, and you think you have done all settings correctly, you should know that it may take upto a day or two for it to work.

Your old blogspot domain name will now redirect to the new domain too.

Download all your facebook information

Did you know that you could download all of your Facebook information in one go?

Go to Account settings. There should be a 'Download your information' option right at the bottom.

Facebook introduced this service back in October 2010. Anyone who wants a copy of the information can request a zip file. Facebook will take some time in making the file, and in about 6 hours, your information should be ready. At least mine was - and it was 125 Mb in size.

What information do you get? According to Facebook,

"Your file will include the following information:

Your profile information (e.g., your contact information, interests, groups)

Wall posts and content that you and your friends have posted to your profile

Photos and videos that you have uploaded to your account

Your friend list

Notes you have created

Events to which you have RSVP’d

Your sent and received messages

Any comments that you and your friends have made on your Wall posts, photos, and other profile content"

And there is no way to choose which data you can download. It's either everything or nothing.

This is really helpful if, by chance, you lose all your data on your hard disk. Or you just want a backup of all your facebook content.

The profile information includes everything that you put on your profile on facebook, including all pages that you liked, all groups that you joined, all your relationships, etc. in an html format (with the information as text).

It also includes all photos, videos, comments by friends, wall posts, notes, events, messages, and one friend list which has all friends listed in a table, as facebook itself said.

What it doesn't include, however, are custom friend lists! So if you've divided your friend list into separate lists of school friends and college friends, there is no way of getting that information.

The number of 'likes' on a post are included, but who liked it, is not shown.

All of this is in an indexed html file. There are also separate folders for photos and videos, so each album has it's own folder. If you've put captions on your pics, then those become the file names. If the captions include symbols like ' :) ' or '<3' then the filename becomes ' ) ' or ' 3'.

The pics are of the size shown in your facebook album, unless you uploaded a high resolution image. Videos are in .mp4 format.

One thing confuses me though - After I download my information once, when can I download newer information? When I go back to the download page, it just gives me an option to download the same thing again. What if I want to download after a few days, and I want all newer information to be included too?

Here's my list of top 10 animated movies to look forward to in 2011:

# 10 : Mars Needs Moms : Releasing in March 2011, this has a shaky storyline, where a youg boy finds that his mom has been abducted by aliens, and goes on an inter-planetary adventure to rescue her.

# 9 : Arthur Christmas : This Christmas special, releasing November 2011, is something to look forward to. Arthur is... Santa's son? How is that possible? The trailer doesn't reveal much, but surely a funny story with an unlikely protagonist.

# 8 : Puss in Boots : This Shrek spin-off has Antonio Banderas has playing Puss-in-boots as usual, and after a fat puss in Shrek Forever After, I really want to see puss as the central character, for once. Releasing November 2011.

# 7 : Winnie The Pooh : This classic returns in July 2011, the same time Harry Potter 7 Part 2 comes out. What makes it so special is that it is traditionally animated: each frame is drawn by hand.

# 6 : Rio : From the director of Ice Age I have high expectations, and the trailer seems hilarious enough: A bird who's scared of flying! Coming April 2011.

# 5 : Gnomeo & Juliet : A version of Shakespeare's play, based on warring gnomes. And a love story, of course. Releasing in February.

# 4 : The Smurfs : These little blue creatures are coming to central park, August 2011!

# 3 : Rango : March 2010. Johnny Depp giving voice to a chameleon. From the directors of Pirates Of The Caribbean. Need I say more?

# 2 : Kung Fu Panda 2 : Jack Black returns as the epic panda Po, and if this movie turns out to be as good as the first one, It's gonna be one hell of a ride. Coming May 2011.

# 1 : The Adventures Of Tintin : The Secret Of The Unicorn : Tintin and Captain Haddock. Directed by Steven Spielberg, with a little help from Peter Jackson. These two combined, its bound to be spectacular. This will be Spielberg's first venture into animation, and Tintin fans would hope it's Spielberg at his best - though they would have to wait till the end of the year, as it's releasing December 2011.

Note: I didn't include Cars 2 in the top 10 - maybe because I never really liked Cars that much.

Sleep

I can't sleep.

I've found that I can't sleep until I exhaust myself. I can remain awake till 10 am. On a weekday.

Part of my insomnia maybe caused by the fact that I wake up late, and considering the fact that I have my summer holidays going on, I find it hard to wake up early.

And I can't sleep when there is any noise. I find it hard to concentrate on my sleep if there is any noise.

And I can't sleep when my feet aren't covered by a sheet. I guess it is due to the human need to feel protected, which may have been since prehistoric times.

I have to be mentally exhausted. Otherwise while I try to sleep, my brain just keeps thinking. And thinking. About random stuff. About stuff that I don't want to think. If I go to sleep thinking this stuff, I get nightmares. And if I tell my brain not to think that stuff, it doesn't really work. I scream at my brain, "Go to sleep!" and it just replies, "No." Sigh.

Which is why I prefer not to even try to sleep early. I have found that I am most productive between 12 am and 4 am.

My productivity at different times of the day

I wish I could be more like Jughead, who could sleep almost anywhere, any time of the day. I lack this innate ability to doze off like that, and envy anyone who fall off to sleep as soon as they lie down.

I think I'd go back to reading Archies for now.

Conspiracy Theories

I am diabolical.

Oh, you don't believe me? I can prove it. I am currently devising a secret plan which is going to overthrow the current established authorities and plan to take over the world.

Or not.

Well part of that line was true. I AM cooking up a secret plan. And I have a partner in crime too. RV. Yeah, The Random Variable and me are up to no good. It's a conspiracy!

Ah, that reminds me of the overly used line from a well-known Shakespearean play about a well-known Roman leader who would not have been that well-known if not for the well-known writer who wrote a play which succeeded in becoming well-known.

'Et tu Brute? Then fall, Caesar!'

Oh, how this line is apt in the situation, I cannot emphasize more.

Being a part of a conspiracy, is.. fun! I'm sure people have nothing better to do than to devise secret plans with associates, which are not for the common ear.

Which brings me to the top conspiracy theories of all time. Some, you might be aware of, some will just blow you away.

1. 9/11 - This features the top of the list, as I was really surprised when I heard about it, and found it hard to believe that it could, in any way, be a conspiracy, till i saw a very well-made 'documentary' on it called Zeitgeist which convincingly describes how the September 11 attacks were caused by the US Government itself, in an attempt to gain control in the middle east. Though you may find it preposterous, there are an increasing number of people who believe in this theory, and want answers from the US President, including Charlie Sheen ( of Two And a Half Men) seen here in this youtube video .

2. NASA faked the moon landings - Some people do believe that some, or all, of the moon landings were faked. This theory is based on the claim that NASA's footage has anomalies, like shadows going in different directions and the US flag blowing in the wind. Why weren't there any stars? 3. UFO at Roswell, 1947 - This propelled the usage of the terms UFO and Flying Saucer, if not anything else. The claim is that the authorities recovered debris, including alien bodies, after an unidentified flying object crashed at Roswell. Belief in extra-terrestrial beings escalated, and Hollywood found a new topic to make movies on.

4. The Illuminati and the New World Order - A secret society founded in the south of Germany in 1776, which consisted of the 'Illuminati' or the enlightened ones, who secretly control the world's affairs, and who are the masterminds behind events that will lead to the establishment of a New World Order, which basically means that a group of extremely rich and (politically) powerful people dominate the entire world by 'globalization', creating a One World Government. The US Federal Reserve Bank is a part of this NWO, and alleged members include Winston Churchill, the Bush family and Barack Obama. Their objective? "To create a world system of financial control, in private hands." A one world communist Government?

The Philadelphia Experiment - An experiment based on Einstein's unified field theory, where the US Navy tried to make an object (in this case, a naval destroyer) invisible, essentially by bending light around it. And when the ship reappeared, some sailors were embedded in the metal structures of the ship. Yeah, right.

Okay, now I'm completely overwhelmed by the number of conspiracy theories in history, including The Priory of Sion ( The Da Vinci Code, remember?) and the Protocols of the Elders of Zion, not to mention Princess Diana's death and John F Kennedy's assasination. Was the Pearl Harbour incident allowed to happen by President Franklin Roosevelt?

The Lost Soul

The worst part about falling in love is falling out of love.

Different people have different ways to fall out of love, however. Some people wake up one day realizing that their partner is not good enough. Some people fall in love with someone else, so they fall out of love with the previous person.

It sucks, of course, for the partner, in such a situation. Results in heart break. Paramedics rush to the spot.

Dealing with heart break? Different people, different ways. Like ignoring the person. Or listening to sad songs till you start crying. Talking to friends. Or punching a hole in the wall.

I just came across the saddest way of coping with heart break. One of my friends, I shall call him LS (not Low Standard. This goes for all you people, including you, RV, who assumed LS to stand for Low Standard. LS actually stands for Lost Soul..) , updated his status after a break up. And kept updating it. It's really heart-wrenching to see this poor guy spill his heart out on facebook. Brings out a lot of tears, to say the least. Here's a few of his statuses, in chronological order:

Oh, let me introduce the Peeved Mythomaniac (PM). Yes, Mythomaniac is a word, and it does suit him, as he does have a tendency to lie or exaggerate the truth. Peeved, 'cause he appears so in this post, even though on normal days he is irritating himself, and proud of it, too.

So this is my sixth blog post. And I realize that my blog has no specific theme to it, apart from me ranting about stuff, or a few chats. And it doesn't serve much purpose, too, apart from Me, as a writer, expressing my creativity in an outlet that grants me some audience. And a few laughs to the readers, I hope. And while I say that there is no theme to it, there is some consistency: the sarcasm. Most of my posts have a large amount of satire, and if you can't understand it, then you need a quick sarcasm-check.

Funnily enough, The Elusive Poet has been the favorite post out of the first 4, and I would like to thank all those involved in making that happen (i.e. just EP) and thanks to the rest of the cast for the inspiration for the rest of the blog. And no, this is not sarcasm.

Apparently we have 4 Jack Sparrows running around, and no Pastafarian yet. Guess people are yet to come out of the closet. Ahoy there, Mateys!

Pastafarianism

An Announcement:

I am changing my religious belief. I am renouncing Atheism in favor of Pastafarianism. If Intelligent Design does exist, as almost all religions propagate, and the world, specifically humanity, was created by a superior creature who is omnipresent and all-knowing, and is pure and can make no mistakes, then that superior creature HAS to be His Noodliness The Flying Spaghetti Monster.

Why, you ask? First, because the theory of 'Evolution' makes no sense. I mean, do you expect me to believe that we humans, superior to all other creatures on this planet, are descended from mere monkeys? My vanity forces me to disagree. And has anyone ever been seen turning from a monkey into a human? No, scientists only dig up old bones and start false rumors, when they don't even realize that this 'evidence' has been put up by His Noodliness Himself. Humans have not evolved from monkeys, but from Pirates. ( Humans share around 95% DNA with monkeys, and more than 99.9% DNA with pirates - The Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster.)

Global Warming is also a direct result of the decrease in the number of pirates (the sea-faring, swash-buckling ones, not the modern day downloaders) and here is the graph illustrating it:

And then there is the infallible evidence that His Noodliness created the universe. None of us were around to see it, ofcourse, but there are written accounts of it. And the Holy Book of The Pasta gives a detailed description of his powers, an example of which would be the expansion of the universe, which he is constantly fiddling with the help of his noodly appendage. His appendages also control Google's search engine.

Ofcourse, all other so-called creators, especially the Invisible Pink Unicorn, are fake. As we all know, there can only be one Creator of the Universe, as there is only one universe, but people seem to forget that. No wonder we have so many beliefs around the world. But Pastafarianism is the One True Religion, and His Noodliness the one true creator. He is, obviously, invisible and can pass through matter. It is indeed the ultimate truth in the universe.

The Holy book of the Pasta also contains extensive details of the events leading to the Great Wars between the Instant and the Cup noodles (which the instant noodles won, after a tremendous fight by the Cup noodles). It specifically says that Fryday is the holiest day of the week.

For obvious reasons, you cant ask His Noodliness to prove that he exists. And if the reason is not obvious to you yet, let me illustrate it: its because He doesn't want to.

The Elusive Poet

You must have noticed a 'Cast' section on this blog. Over there, in the column on your right. Just below the 'About Me' Section. Yea, that one. It consists of a few of the people I interact with, and whose recent interactions with me are worth mentioning. These are real people in my life, and chances are, if you're reading this blog, you know some of them.

One such person is the EP (short for Elusive Poet).

Now if you're wondering whether the nicknames I have given (yes, they are nicknames, and there is no such person named Elusive in my life. Who the hell would name their child Elusive?) have any relevancy to the actual person, then the answer is yes.

My name is Syzygial Scorpius, and I am not a pirate.

I do not commit acts of robbery. Or criminal violence. And especially not in any sea / ocean / water body. Or their shores. And neither do i illegally download copyright Software / music / games / movies / TV shows / E-Books / Groceries / T-shirts from the internet.

Definitely not Groceries.

After all, why on earth would I want to download readily available content for free, when I can easily pay for it and download? Better still, go to a shop and pay for it? And if they don't have it, then make them order it, and then wait for it? Why indeed? :-/
I love to pay $100 for original video games that I don't intend to play after 2 weeks. That is, if i don't throw them within 2 hours. I also enjoy renting DVDs, but I prefer to buy a copy for myself, too. I love that anti-piracy ad they have in each DVD, the one you can't skip. Click on this youtube link to see why I love it.

And I don't listen to songs, unless on the radio. With all the groceries, video games and DVD rentals, I can't really afford music albums too! So I end up singing and playing on my own, even if my roomies can't stand it.

And this picture confuses me. Comment, if u can explain what it tries to convey..

I keep having nightmares about this picture.

I believe that Piracy is immoral and unjust, as all of us should pay exactly what the entertainment industry demands us to, and if we can't afford it, we should stop enjoying Art and media, in all it's forms, i.e. music, films, and books. Even images shouldn't be spared, and we should be charged to visit our local museums and art shows to have a look at paintings. Wikipedia should also be banned, along with everything Wiki-related , as free content is just not acceptable!

Pirates are common people all around us, who do illegal activities such as downloading movies for free. Or a single song. They don't realize how much they are harming the Industry, which earns much more in a day than you could ever earn in a lifetime.

I am ashamed to admit I know a few pirates myself. One is the Subversive Sarcast (SS), who plans to overthrow the entire Entertainment Industry by downloading all there is to download. But don't tell anyone, it's a secret. And yes, if that plan doesn't work, he has a second weapon - his Sarcasm. And his idol is Jack Sparrow! :O

Yeah, Google. The answer to all of life's mysteries. And i mean ALL. From 'How did life start' to 'How to destroy life', from Acidic acid to Zinger Burger, Quarks to Quasars.

I should, at this point, introduce EP. Short for Elusive Poet. It was the poet who triggered my blogging, actually, by pointing me towards several of those 6-7 blogs i read in the past week. And it was the poet who linked me towards RD's blog which acted as a catalyst in making me write my own. So all hate mails should be forwarded to RD. (RD = Rebellious Doodler = 'R' in the first post). So The EP is.. well read, intelligent, witty, and also elusive and a good poet.

Face it, the first time you heard the word Syzygial, you must have googled it. You would have found it's meaning, along with it's root word: Syzygy. And if you haven't, you should. It doesn't cost anything you know..

Want to learn a new instrument? Google it. Pick up a new recipe? Google it. Build your own black hole? Google it. Or click here. (WTF?!!)

Frankly, most people would be surprised by what google can do for them. And what services google offers. Like Google Sites , Google Insights , Docs , etc. But the irony is, the most widely visited site is in fact the least complicated, least cluttered. And it doesn't even have it's own content. It uses other sites to supply the answers! (notably, YouTube, Wikipedia and Answers.com)

Ofcourse, there are other search engines too, like Yahoo! and Bing. But "Google It" sounds much cooler than "Yahoo it" or "Bing it".

I would like it if you used google. I will hate you forever if you use any other search engine, but if you use google once everyday you will certainly go to heaven. And if you stop other people from using any other search engine, you will also get a chance to take part in the heavenly lucky draw on your way to heaven, which has a flying motorcycle as the first prize.

LOL. Ofcourse i was kidding. Motorcycles don't fly. The first prize is a normal 180 cc bike.

Blogging

So here i was, chatting as usual. My way of interacting with people who seem like a billion miles away. Using :D and :P every other second. And i ask the one i'm chatting with, lets call her 'R', what she would like to achieve this year. One of her answers: To write a new blog. Now that gets me thinking. She already has one?? oh boy.

Over the week, I read many blogs. Well around 6-7 atleast, which i consider to be many, seeing as how less often i read blogs 'cause i keep myself busy wasting my time doing nothing productive to the naked eye. (Don't go looking for a microscope right now, measuring my productivity will count as a loss in yours.)

So here i am, doing something productive, something creative. Writing my first post.

I told another friend, lets call her Random Variable (RV for short), that i'm writing a blog.

Her first question: 'It's about?'

Stumped. Is a blog supposed to be about something? :O

Me: nothing specific :P

Yes, writing a blog means you have to name it. And i have a fascination for fancy names, so it took me time to come up with something that i liked. Hope you, as a reader, like it too.

So RV got me started on thinking of the content. I find someone else online (lets call her P) and i tell her about my intentions to blog.

P: what'll u begin with?

Me: blogging

P: errr... topic?

Me:'blogging'

P: ohh now i get it!

Me: :D

And so i start this journey of blogging (like a noob, as my friend Slayer would put it) with no idea of where i'm going.
